ADR calculator: the 1.1.3.6 exemption, limited and excepted quantities

Choose the regime, add the goods with their UN number and quantity, and the tool reads Table A of ADR 2025 and shows you, step by step, whether the load can qualify. The result is indicative.

Indicative result, not a confirmed ADR classification; check the official ADR 2025 text and with the ADR safety adviser (DGSA).

Step 1 · The goods

What is in the transport unit?

One row for each kind of dangerous goods. Type the UN number and we fill in the transport category from ADR 2025 Table A (column 15); you can also choose it by hand, for example from section 14 of the safety data sheet (SDS).

Good 1

Points—

Type the 4-digit UN number (from the label or from section 14 of the SDS), for example 1202 or UN 1202: we fill in the transport category from ADR 2025 Table A. The category can be changed by hand at any time.

Unit: kg for solids, liquefied gases and dissolved gases (net mass) and for articles (mass without packagings); L for liquids and, for compressed gases, adsorbed gases and chemicals under pressure, the water capacity of the receptacle.

Note a: UN Nos. 0081, 0082, 0084, 0241, 0331, 0332, 0482, 1005 and 1017 (category 1) are multiplied by 20; the maximum quantity is 50 kg.

Empty uncleaned packagings: category 0 if they contained goods of category 0, otherwise category 4 (1.1.3.6.1).

Goods in limited quantities (LQ) or excepted quantities (EQ) and the other exemptions of 1.1.3.1 (a) and (d)–(f), 1.1.3.2–1.1.3.5, 1.1.3.7, 1.1.3.9 and 1.1.3.10 are not added here: they are not taken into account.

What the ADR 1.1.3.6 exemption is

ADR 1.1.3.6 provides a partial exemption for dangerous goods carried in packages: if the sum of the points, calculated per transport unit, does not exceed 1,000, not all ADR requirements apply. 1.1.3.6.2 lists what remains compulsory.

The tool reads the transport category from Table A of ADR 2025 by UN number, applies the multipliers of 1.1.3.6.3 and 1.1.3.6.4 and has separate checks for limited quantities (LQ, chapter 3.4) and excepted quantities (EQ, chapter 3.5). It does not classify the goods, does not confirm compliance and does not replace the ADR safety adviser (DGSA) or the official text.

Method

How we calculate

  1. We find the transport category

From the UN number, the category (0–4) comes from column (15) of ADR 2025 Table A, Chapter 3.2; you can also choose it by hand, for example from section 14 of the SDS.

  2. We apply the multiplier

The quantity is multiplied by 50 (category 1), by 20 (category 1, UN Nos. in note a), by 3 (category 2), by 1 (category 3) or by 0 (category 4).

  3. We add up the points

All goods in the same transport unit are added into one total.

  4. We compare with the threshold

Up to and including 1,000 points the partial exemption can apply; goods of category 0 exclude it.

Limits of the tool

  • The calculation is indicative and does not replace the safety adviser or the official ADR text.
  • LQ and EQ goods are not taken into account; they have their own rules.
  • The result concerns one transport unit: the motor vehicle, with or without a trailer.
  • The exemption does not remove every obligation: 1.1.3.6.2 lists the provisions that still apply (for example the transport document and the portable fire extinguisher).
  • Responsibility for the classification and the documents remains with the consignor and the carrier.
  • The exemption applies only to goods carried in packages, not in tanks or in bulk (1.1.3.6.2).
